Naming Strategies

Alliteration: This entails the deliberate repetition of initial consonant sounds or letters. For instance, the brand Dunkin-Donuts uses two words starting with “D.”

Assonance: Involves the repetition of vowel sounds while changing the consonants in between. Take Lululemon, which repeats the “oo” sound with an intervening “L” sound.

Consonance: Features the repetition of consonant sounds while changing the vowels. Consider Tic Tac, where both words start and end with “T” and “c,” with only a single vowel change in between.

Neologism: Technique involving the creation of novel words. Think about “Google,” originating from the mathematical term “googol” to form a distinct and widely recognized brand name.

Portmanteau: Involves blending two words or parts of words together to create a new word that represents the brand. An example of this is “Netflix” is a portmanteau of “internet” and “flicks,” reflecting its original focus on using the internet to distribute movies.

Rhyming: This is the intentional repetition of ending sounds or letters. For instance, the Jelly Belly brand comprises two words ending with the “elly” sound.
